and the town of Orta lies the Isola 8. Giulio, a mule-road leads over the mountain, by Arolo, to Varallo in the Val Sessia. At Varallo is the Nuovo Gerusaîemme of Piedmont ; its Sacra Monte, the most remarkable in Italy, is visited by thousands of devotees annually. From Baveno to Varallo by Fella, is only a day's journey ; and the author, who has twice been that way, has no recol lection of any scenery superior to the variety and beauty presented in this excursion. To go to Arona from the Lake

of Orta, the traveller lands at Buccione, at the head of the lake. The view from the road above this village is very fine, where the high peaks of the Monte Rosa add their grandeur to the beauties of the scene. (Plate the fifth.)
