Trento. — The Chateau of Buon Consiglio. CHAPTER I The New Italy I had longed to see the Dolomites again, that region which is now entirely Italian. I was there in 1911 and 1912, while it was still under the Austrian yoke, and I was one of the first to travel over the splendid road which now runs from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo. The Italian aspect of this district and of many of its little towns, struck me so much that in an article I wrote for the Revue des Deux Mondes I called them
instinctively by their Italian names. I wrote of Bolzano, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, of Pieve di Livinallongo, instead of Bozen, the Drei Zinnen and Buchenstein. So hotly did the two nationalities vie with each other for possession, that nearly every town, valley, pass, river and peak had both an I talia n and a German name.
