Field-labour and hard fare, for in stance, are but indifferent cosmetics ! It is a common and a true remark, that in England the peasant-girls, and in Scotland the ladies, are the handsomer. The reason is that, in the latter country, the lower women work harder, and gene rally in the open air ; while, in wealthier England, the
