BOLZANO, ihe ancient market town to which the glowing summits of the Dolomites, scene of many fairy tales, lend an impressive character, is the metropolis of the Adige Valley, justly celebrated as one of the finest spots on earth. North and South, alpine and mediterra nean flora

, a gorgeous past and flourishing present, here combine with all their charms and contrasts into « matchless landscape, to visit which has become the desire and the happy achievement of thousands of travellers. Each season in the Adige Valley has its particular beauty. In the mild, sunny days of spring with their wealth of lovely blossoms, Bolzano, with its surrounding mountains slill snow-capped, is most attractive, not only as a stopping place between England and Southern Italy, but for a prolonged stay

. In summer it is an ideal centre for exploring the Dolomite and Ortler Regions either on foot or by car. The network of well kept, clearly marked paths make it easy to reach all the interesting and lovely points in the vicinity, numerous old and interesting castles, quaint villages, particularly fine view-points, lovely lakes, forests and vineyards. As a centre for motor excursions Bolzano is supreme. Excellent roads radiate in all directions, taking one either through the amazing Dolomite or Ortler

scenery to north, east or west, or south to beautiful Lake Garda. Five mountain railways take one rapidly from Bolzano to the highest points in the immediate vicinity whence incredibly magnificent mountain panoramas can be seen. Autumn, the epoch of fruit gathering and of new wine, is considered the finest season in the happy Adige Valley, then tinted in a hundred hues, and is particularly well adapted for a sojourn of some time for the grape and fruit cures. The constant sunny mildness of the climate

continues during the short winter season, free of severe frosts, rough winds and fogs, but offering nevertheless copious possi bilities for practising every winter sport on the neigh bouring high ground. In every respect the management of the Staffler Family Hotels come up to the expectations of travellers whether they come to Bolzano as simple tourists or as experienced travellers. Hotel Grifone-Greif, the mother-house, held since J8I6 by the family, has at all times enjoyed an excellent reputation

View on the Rosengarten Foto Engel THE JOURNEY TO BOLZANO. Bolzano-Gries is conveniently reached from London, Paris, Bale, Milan, Venice and many other centres. The principal routes from London and Paris are (a) via Bale - Zurich - Innsbruck - Brennero (b) via Simplon or St. Gotthard - Milan - Verona - Trento. Both these routes are served by express trains with through carriages, sleeping cars and restaurant cars. Leaving London in the afternoon, one can reach Bolzano on the evening of the

following day by either of these routes. AS A TOURIST CENTRE Bolzano (870 ft.), now united with the health- resort Gries, is the capital of the homonymous province and the chief centre in the Dolomite region for ex cursions by rail and road. All express trains from Inns bruck, Milan, Verona, Bome, Florence, etc., stop there. The town occupies an attractive situation on the banks of the rivers Talfer and I sarco, which unite and join the Adige at this point. The valley is broad and fertile, and around

it rise beautiful wooded hills. Bolzano lies at the western extremity of the Great Dolomite Road (90 miles in length, leading to Carezza al Lago (Karersee), Canazei, Cortina and Dobbiaco, over passes reaching alti tudes of 7-8.000 ft.) and is the railway junction on the Verona—Brennero—Innsbruck line for the well-known, all-the-year-round resort of Merano, from which it is one hour by rail. Bolzano attracts over 100.000 visitors annually. a
