111. We could see the very birfch of this stream in the oozings ont of thè coarse sward whieh covers the western lip of the pass. The first portion of the descent of the Arlberg is very steep, the road zigzagging across the river and over several hridges spanning it. The nearer views down the valley are very fine, and the prospect of the distant monntains beyond its walls, both to the north and to thè sonth-west, ìs grand and picturesque. At Stuben, whieh is the first post-station from St. Antom

Here we may regard the precipitons descent and the rüder par t of the Arlberg as terniinating, the valley below becoming graduai ly softer and greener, and rieher and more beautiful, still preserving its mountain barriers on both sides, but in a gentler form.
