at the Kaiserinn every day at five. The attcndance, howcver, was small, and chiefly of foreigners. On one of thè days I dined there only fourteen persons were present, and they were all English. In thè evening I went to both the opera and the theatre, just as I went to other Sights, that is, more to see thè honses and thè company, and the character of thè performance, than for mere amusement. In the opera-theatrc I saw a part of Flotow's comic opera of Martha, or Richmond Market, the characters being
English and thè scene laid at Richmond; in the Burg theatre I saw a part of Schilleris Bride of Messina. Both honses are of moderate size, and handsomely fitted up. In thè opera there were two or three good singers, one espeeially, Fraulein Liebhardt ; but thè opera itself was very stupid. The principal performers in the Braut von Messina declairaed admirably Schiller’s beautiful verses, and everything was was and gracefully and most eamestly done ; bnt mneh too formally, and ealmly, and solemnly, for
