(Rte. 227.) “ After sleeping at Vigo the traveller may examine the neighbourhood, reach Carnpedello, If hr., and proceed to Canazei, | hr. more: the scenery ex tremely fine; thence two paths lead into the Gadeithal, The traveller may easily take the longest, and yet reach San Leonhard, where there is a clean inn (Evangelista’s, see Rte. 227), early

In the course of this walk an easy path leads from Canazei close to the magnificent moun tain of Lang-Kofel, and between it and another peak called the Rizzo Sella, which eventually leads into the Grodnerthal; but by leaving this road before reaching the village of Plann, and turning to the eastward over a second Col called the Grddner-Jochl, the traveller enters the Gaderthal at Colfosco (Rte. 227), after having seen all the finest scenery which adorns these ramified valleys, and

and in its place there carne a graduai depressiori , wl.ich continued for a long period. The cbange occurred probably towards thè end of tfae Tuff deposits. During this period of depression the * Schiern Dolomite ’ and thè £ Raibl beds ’ were formed. The moststriking characteristic of the ‘Schiern Dolomite’ Formation is its distribntion in the form, either of great isolaied massives, or equally isolated long wall-like lines or curves. The Schiern, Lang Kofel, Ghierdenazza, Sella, and Marmolata

Mendola Dolomite being met with at 7,000 feet above thè sea, a thickness of about 4,500 feet remains for the Schiern Dolomite, in thè upper mass of thè Marmolata. It possesses a similar thickness in the Lang Kofel ; but at thè Sella plateau itis already less than 2,000 feet. Farther east, in Monte Nuvulau, Set Sass, and Monte Tofana, its thickness does not exceed a few hundred feet. Another way of grouping the £ Schiern Dolomite 5 may be made dependent upon tbe presence or absence of later beds lying

upon the Dolomite. The variety in the scenery is closely related to this difference. Hence the contrast between the pinnacles and hatchet-like blades of the Lang Kofel and thè level plateau surface of thè summit of the Schiern. The pinnacles of the Schiern, fringing its northern border, however, recali tbe Lang Kofel character. In the group characterised hy the presence of later beds
