Before our meeting- at Friesach, thè Churchills had made O a short visit to three of thè more western valleys of the Karavanken—the Loibl Thal, traversed hy the diligence to Laibach ; the Boden Thal, more to thè west ; and the Bären Thal, still farther in thè game direction. In the Loibl Thal they stayed at a little way=side house, not far from the entrance, ealled ‘Deutscher Peter, 5 where (Her man is spoken. It is much frequented by the hunters of the chamois, wliich are still numerous upon
the Gross Gerlouz—a huge rocky mass, risiog abruptiy in thè line of the north Karavanken ridge. The valley is filled with short spnrs from its sides, so that any general view is impossibile until the heigkt of the pass is gainedi From thè summit they looked down into a narrow deep valley, formed by a curious duplication of the main ridge. Look- ing up it westward, there is a fine profile view of the precipices of the Sea, the Seleniza, and other peaks. The next valley, the Boden Thal, is open and
clear, from Bleiberg, with its numerous lead mines, situated at the entrance, to its head, closed by the precipices of the Ver- taca. A truck ascends under these to thè summit of the lateral ridge separating the Boden from the Bären Thal, and thence along the main ridge to thè summit of the Stou, 7,326 feet above the sea—the Mghest peak of the western Karavanken.
