The pare of Gries Foto Engel stands the Savings Bank, a handsome building. The ele mentary and middle-class school Via Franciscani and the elementary school Oltrisarco are worth visiting for their architecture and interior decorations. At the end of the Via del Museo we reach the bridge stretching across the broad bed of the Talvera on its leaving the Sam-Valley. On the opposite bank lies GRIES, a very sunny and warm health resort. Electric tramways run from the station of Bolzano through the

town to Gries and through Oltrisarco to S. Giacomo. SPORT, RECREATIONS, AND DIVERSIONS AT BOLZANO. At Bolzano there are numerous sources of recreation and amusements. At the new theatre plays, comedies and dramas are presented, varied by occasional operatic perfor mances. Excellent vocal and instrumental concerts, at which well known artists appear, are given at the Museum Hall. At Gries during the winter and spring seasons orchestral concerts are given at the Kurhaus. At the restaurants in Bolzano

there are excellent orchestras. Carnivals and fancy dress balls are organised. There are good tennis courts, and for walking and climbing excur sions Bolzano is a splendid centre. View on the Rosengarten Foto Engel THE JOURNEY TO BOLZANO. Bolzano-Gries is conveniently reached from London, Paris, Bale, Milan, Venice and many other centres. The principal routes from London and Paris are (a) via Bale - Zurich - Innsbruck - Brennero (b) via Simplon or St. Gotthard - Milan - Verona - Trento. Both these routes are served by express trains with through carriages, sleeping cars and restaurant cars. Leaving London in the afternoon, one can reach Bolzano on the evening of the

following day by either of these routes. AS A TOURIST CENTRE Bolzano (870 ft.), now united with the health- resort Gries, is the capital of the homonymous province and the chief centre in the Dolomite region for ex cursions by rail and road. All express trains from Inns bruck, Milan, Verona, Bome, Florence, etc., stop there. The town occupies an attractive situation on the banks of the rivers Talfer and I sarco, which unite and join the Adige at this point. The valley is broad and fertile, and around

it rise beautiful wooded hills. Bolzano lies at the western extremity of the Great Dolomite Road (90 miles in length, leading to Carezza al Lago (Karersee), Canazei, Cortina and Dobbiaco, over passes reaching alti tudes of 7-8.000 ft.) and is the railway junction on the Verona—Brennero—Innsbruck line for the well-known, all-the-year-round resort of Merano, from which it is one hour by rail. Bolzano attracts over 100.000 visitors annually. a

The old-world, mellow and romantic appearance of the town of Bolzano is reminiscent of Nuremberg. The delightful mediaeval colonnaded streets, quaint buildings, market squares and odd corners, are particularly fascinat ing. On holidays, Sundays, and market days the local life is specially interesting. On these occasions the bright coloured, picturesque native costumes which are worn are in pleasant harmony with the old-world mise en scene. Many a happy hour can be spent watching the busy local

life from a table outside a restaurant or café. Bolzano is very well provided with hotels and restau rants of all categories, and they all have the important merit of offering comfort, cleanliness, excellent fare, and service at a very moderate cost. Among the chief 'sights' of Bolzano are : the Cathe dral, the Victor Emanuel Place, the Museum, containing many local relics, the quaint streets, and many buildings of considerable architectural merit and interest. At Easter interesting festivals are

held. The flower market in its delightful setting is a charming spectacle. In May an important Fair is held. Bolzano is an important fruit growing centre. In the Spring (March-April) the blossom in the valley and on the hillsides is a wonderful sight, and reminds one of Taormina in February. In September the grapes and other fruits are gathered. From many points of vantage in and around Bolzano, extremely fine
