It would take them 2 days to do this; or they may make their way by mule and foot-paths, not very difficult, into the Italian valleys of Camonica, of Iseo, and Mto (Rte. ’231) — all abounding in beauty—-and then re-enter Tyrol by the Lag«' di Garda. The pass from Nauders to Mals, cal led the Reschen-Scheideck, is the lowest carriage-road over the main Alps, being 4718 Eng. ft. above the sea-level; which is 57 ft. lower than the road over the Brenner. About -f- m. beyond Nauders the road passes the castle of Naudersburg, and about 2 m. further on reaches the sum mit level of the plain, dividing the waters which fall into the Inn from the tributaries of the Adriatic. Before reaching Keschen a small streamlet, descending from

of the puny river. The Ortler-Spitze, the giant of the Rhaetian Alps, the highest mountain in Austria, now appears in view for some distance. From no other point can the grandeur of his height and outline be better appreciated. The village of Bur ge is lies upon the road; near it are seen the Benedictine Monasteries of Marien- berg, and the Castle of Furstenberg, built by the Bishops of Co!re.
