He took refuge in it 24th Nov. 1809, and remained there until he was betrayed by Roffl on the 24th Jan. 1810. There is a magnificent view over the Passeyrthal from this spot, from which the traveller may either descend to St. Martin’s in that

trees. The views towards the mountains are good, and there is an excellent inn, the Strobe! Wirthshaus, kept by a son of an old friend of Hofer, and in which the Ty rolese made their last stand against the French. The churchyard, con verted into a fortified post by the French, was taken from them by storm by the peasants. Above it rises the ruined Castle Jaufenburg. Here the valley divides into 2 branches ; that on the E. leads up the Waltenthal, by Lambach, and over the Jnnfen Fass (the scene

of a furious combat between the Passeyrs under Hofer and the French, in 180S), down the Jaufen- thal, to Sterzing, on the Brenner road (Rte. 217), a walk of 6 hrs. A horse may be hired in St. Leonhard for 2 fl, 42 kr. up to the summit of the pass (3 hrs.), a steep ascent nearly all the as Moos (2 hrs.). There the v: divides, but the path to the Timbier- Joch takes the rt.-hand branch to Ra- benstein, the last village; near which the bed of a dried-up lake is passed: it burst near the end of the last

of a ruse de guerre of the famous Andrew Hofer, when he attacked the Bavarians from an ambuscade. The spot is not such as a stranger would at first suppose was well chosen for the fearful purpose for which it was selected,—the mind would picture to itself a situation overhung with precipices,—but here the narrow valley suddenly spreads out on the left of the river into a little plain, about a quarter of a mile broad and half a mile long, around which the mountain base sweeps like an amphitheatre

. A little church, and a village through which the road passes, occupy the left bank of the Eisach. On the right, the mountain rises abruptly from the bed of the river. This was the spot chosen by Hofer for the ambuscade of the Tyrolese: he had caused to be prepared, rocks, trunks of trees, and other heavy bodies, on the rise of the mountains above the plain, which were so placed, that when the props were withdrawn which supported them, these masses rolled down the declivity and across the plain, over

In the Library is preserved the letter written by Lord Bathurst to Hofer and the Tyrolese, which accom panied a gift of 30.000/. from the Eng lish government, to assist these bold defenders of their country in their me morable struggle against Buonaparte. commonly snpposed to he by Löffler,, the hrothers Godi, and Hans Lendenstreich. The statne of Maximilian on thè tomb is by Luigi del Buca, and was exeented in 1542. 1 Althongh Maximilian^ monument is the great at- traction that calls visitors to the Hofkirche, it eontains some otlier memorials of high interest. Just as we enter the churcli, adjoining the wall on the left hand side, there is a charaeteristic monnment, in white Tirolese marble, to the memory of the famous Hofer, erected on thè spot where

his body was finally interred. Ön the termination of the war in 1809, Hofer refusing to surrender or to leave his country, was captnred by the French in his native valley, and carrier! to Mantua, where he was shot by the express Orders of Napoleon, on the 20th February, 1810. His body was buried in thè chapel garden of the citadel ; but thirteen years thercafter it was sccrctly disinterred by some of Ms conntrymen, and tran sporteci to Innsbruck. The monument consists of a statue thè size of lite

, and a piece of sculpture in bas-relief below, hearing the simple inseription “Andreas Hofer 1809.” Hofer is represented in bis native costume, standing on a rock, 1 Complete lists of thè persons represented by these statues, as well as descriptioris of the subjects of thè has-reliefs, will he found in thè Hand- book.
