The securing of this station was regarded of the utmost importance ; the commu nication between the two parties of the assailants, de pending upon its being in their hands. The next measure determined on was, that as soon as the gate of St. Thomas, near which stood the Palace of the Doge, might be taken
; a party should force the palace, and immediately put both Andrea Doria and Giannetino to death. It was also agreed, that the general cry should be Fiesco and Liberty. The attack commenced prosperously. The Gate of the Arch, and that of St. Thomas, fell, after a short contest, into the hands of the conspirators. Giannetino, awakened with the first sound of the tumult, rushed from the palace, and was instantly slain. The doge himself escaped, through the cautious regard of Jerome Fiesco for the wealth
